Branding aims to establish a significant and differentiated presence in the market that attracts and retains loyal customers.

This video was produced in 2011 by the MSc Brand Leadership team at Norwich Business School, University of East Anglia. The course was the first of its kind in the world and has attracted students from 23 countries including Japan, USA, Singapore, Taiwan, UK, India and China – to name but a few.

The video they created provides a definition of what branding is and how it is used. Click play on the video below to learn more…

Creating an edgy, memorable and fun looking print ad is a big challenge. Small businesses would prefer to use something simple, like a small, black and white printed flyer or brochure about their company and the products and services they …

Creating an edgy, memorable and fun looking print ad is a big challenge. Small businesses would prefer to use something simple, like a small, black and white printed flyer or brochure about their company and the products and services they offer. But this shouldn’t be the case. Using colour gives you a number of benefits when it comes to advertising. Below are a few of them.

It catches attention

If you really want something to catch the attention of your audience, use colour. A colourful add will be more noticeable compared to something that’s dull or black and white. Colours catch people’s attention because their very attractive and beautiful to look at, given that you’re using the right colour combination or you know how to play around with them. Throw in some passionate red and happy yellow and see how much it makes your ad look better.

People remember it better

Colours can help people retain details, so use this to your advantage. There have been many studies showing the positive relationship between colours and memory. The next time you make a print ad for something, try to use bold colours on text and details that you want your audience to remember, such as the time and date of your event or what going on with your business.

You get to be more creative

Using colours can help get out creative side pumping. A creative ad is an effective ad. You want to make something that’s one of a kind and unique from the rest, something that stand out from the others. Use colours to inspire you to think of something extraordinary and memorable. Your layout artist will also love you for it. Since they’re not bounded to two or three colours, they’ll enjoy making the project and you can see it form their work.

It affects mood

A colourful ad can help uplift your mood and even affect how you think about the brand. Learn to play around and use colours on your ad and use it to affect how your audience looks at it. Use colours that are lively and passionate. Something that makes people feel good and remember your ad. You can also match the colours to the “mood” of your business. Cool colours if you want your clients to feel relaxed and lively colours to energize them. You can get a lot of good responses if you just know what colours to use and how to use it.

As a business owner, one of the staff members that you need to have is an artist. Someone who can help you create memorable and one of a kind designs for your brand that you can use for marketing and sales promotions. Now, finding an artist isn’t difficult, there are millions of people willing to work for you to make your layouts and projects. But as a business owner, you need to choose the right one.

Big businesses have a specific department, composed of three people or more people that manages their designs and layouts of your print marketing needs. But most small businesses can’t afford this, and it really is too much of an investment to have an art department, so one or two persons are enough to handle it.

When choosing an artist, you need to consider the following.

Are they for freelance or full-time?

Do you want your artist to permanently be on the payroll or do you just want them to be paid per project? If so, what are their rates and what can you most likely afford? You can find a lot of freelance designers on line, but this is going to take a bit of getting used to. You have to communicate with them through email or video chat and they won’t be available at all time. If you want someone morepermanent, get an artist that has a background on marketing. They not only can help you with the art, they can understand your marketing plan better and pitch in some ideas.

Do they get your vision?

Don’t get an artist just because they’re good. You want someone who understands what you’re trying to do and integrate it to their projects. Before deciding on hiring someone, spend some time talking to them and getting to know them. Share your ideas and ask them what they think about it or what they can do to make it better through their art.

Do you like them?

Don’t get someone you don’t like. You will be spending a lot of time with your layout artist thinking of ways to create good and effective print marketing ideas, so save yourself the trouble of working with someone you don’t really like and get the artist that fits your criteria perfectly. This way, you’ll be happier with the end result and projects will go as smooth as possible.

When it comes to marketing, the best choices you have are print and online. Both these strategies have their pros and cons. Here’s a short overview on both strategies to help you choose.

Online and social media marketing

With online and social media marketing, everything is instant, you can spread your marketing strategy throughout the Web in a matter of seconds. Millions of people have access to your ads and you don’t have to spend a lot of money for it. The internet is a powerful tool to use if you want to get your products and services to a wider market. Imagine being able to get clients from across the world by just adding a photo on your Facebook page or uploading it in Instragram. With the net, you’re not only limited to posters and flyers, you can make videos, apps, games and more content than you can imagine.

The down side of online and social media marketing is that you market is limited to people who are actively going online. Not everyone has access to the net or even knows how to use a computer, so if they don’t know how to use the technology, your marketing scheme is basically useless. You also need to invest in making sure that your sites are active and are constantly updated in a timely manner. Online, nobody wants a stagnant site. Something has to be going on to keep your audience interested in you and loyally follow your updates.

Print marketing

This has been used to promote businesses, products and services and events since people started printing. Recently, printing companies have offered a wider range of materials, ink and printing styles to cater to more creative clients. You are not limited to the old paper and ink printing if you want to go for print marketing . You can print your brand or logo on anything these days. From coffee mugs to t-shirts, you can brand and print anything for your marketing strategy. If you print generic items, then you don’t have to worry about updating them for some time.

However, with Print marketing , you have to invest a bit of money for the materials. Ink doesn’t come cheap, but if you print in bulks, you can definitely save money. It also takes a bit longer to prepare the materials since it needs to be printed, unlike going online where you can just click the share button. Print marketing campaigns also move a bit slower compared to online, so you have to know where to place your ads to get the most exposure

Many of us have experienced going downtown, walking around the mall or just strolling around the street, meeting someone handing out flyers or brochures promoting a new business or promotion. Have you ever visited an establishment after seeing what was on the flyer/brochure?

It’s likely that you have. If not, the small print ads you’ve come across may not have been well thought out. When done correctly, the strategy of handing out small print materials like brochures and flyers can prove very effective. In fact, it’s so effective that it still works after multiple decades of use.

Below are a few benefits of flyers and brochures and why you should continue with them or at least give them a try.

They’re inexpensive

Compared to a giant billboard or any other big print ads, having flyers and brochures printed out is inexpensive. Many printing companies would offer bulk or mass printing for a small amount, depending on the materials and colors used on the print. Stick with the most basic design and printing materials, and you’ll have enough brochures and flyers to last you for a year or for the whole ad campaign without breaking the bank. They’re quick to distribute You can reach out to hundreds of people within a few minutes if you use small print ads. If you have these ads distributed in places where there are a lot of people, you can expect new customers by the end of the day.

Less hassle

All you really need is someone who can give the flyers of brochures out and you’re good to go. Just make sure that this person is familiar with what the ad contains because some people who are interested in it might walk up to them and ask them more information about it. to make it easier, have one of your staff members to hand out the flyers. It makes interactions more personal and real.

Less maintenance

If you print out a generic flyer or brochure, then you won’t have to constantly re-do the design and content. Always print in bulk. It’s easier to manage and you don’t need to print out another batch over and over again.

They simply work

Businesses have been using flyers and brochures to market their products and services for centuries. Although a lot of businesses have taken the cyber route and do most of their marketing online. This method still work, no matter what year or age it is.

Advertising and marketing are the best ways to have people come over and try your products and services. Unlike big companies and organizations, small businesses have limited room to move around when it comes to advertising. Most of them are on a strict budget , and many would even just skip on advertising and marketing and just work on investing on operations and labour.

The truth is that any small business can prosper if marketed and advertised correctly. Think of it as an investment, having others know about you because they’ve seen your ad somewhere and became interested might cost a lot, but it’s going to come back in sales.

If you don’t know how to start an ad campaign, below are some helpful tips.

Plan it out

You have to think of why you’re planning an ad campaign and what your goal with it is. Are you doing it to get people to visit your establishment? Do you want to double sales through attracting them with your products and services? Do you want people to know that there is a sale coming? What do you want your ads to point out? Write it down and remember it when you’re with the artist to help him or her create when you want.

Budget it

You can’t have a print ad campaign without budgeting it. Some people like to do this first before picking out the materials to know their limits, but some also do it after so that they know how much they’re going to spend. Either way, write down how much you are most like going to spend for the ad campaign so that auditing won’t be as hard.

Conceptualize

You’ll want to spend some time on conceptualizing a design or them. Sit down with the artist and tell them what you want. Point out key details that you want them to incorporate and ask them to be as creative as they want with the design. Let them storm up a design for you and always go over it for approval or changes.

Pick out a type and materials

There are many different types of print ads and you can present them in many ways. Choose from stickers to posters and even billboards. Once you know what type of print ad you want, choose from what material the ads will be printed on. As a rule of thumb, print in bulk to save on printing costs.
